ABOUT

Klaas Muller was founded in 2000. Muller's passion for art was passed on by his family, known as artists and art dealers for several generations.

After having studied Art-History (University Gent) Klaas Muller decided to open a gallery in Brussels, near the Sablon . During the last years he became more and more focused on Flemish old master paintings, drawings and sculptures of the late 16th and 17th century with a preference for Rubens, his studio and his school. Amongst its clientele the gallery counts international renowned museums (eg MET, Louvre), other dealers and private collectors.

The galleries major event is the BRAFA-art fair (annually, late January) where we hope to surprise clients and art-lovers with new acquisitions every time.

Alongside Frans Snyders and Paul De Vos, Jan Fyt was the most important Flemish animal painter of the 17th century.

Fyt is particularly known for his depictions of dead game. He also painted living animals, such as hunting scenes with dogs or falcons, bird concerts, and fighting animals, which were some of his favorite subjects.

Only four paintings by Fyt featuring chickens are known. Three of these canvases have more or less the same dimensions as our painting.

Two of them are located in the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne.

The fourth painting, in the Prado Museum in Madrid, resembles this painting but is much larger.

The Rooster and the Jewel was a popular fable in the Netherlands.
